Analytical vs. Precision Balances: Know the Differences

When it comes to lab equipment, not all balances are created equal—or created for the same applications! If you’re in the market for a new balance, give this article a read first. We’ll help pinpoint the primary differences between analytical vs. precision balances to help you get the best scale for the job at hand. 

Analytical vs. Precision Balances

It’s easy to think that a scale’s just a scale but, when it comes to the kinds of things you’ll be working on in your lab, there’s a lot to consider: what exactly will be measured, what kind of maximum capacity you need, how crucial accuracy is, and much more. Investing in the wrong scale is the last thing you need, so make sure you’re choosing the right one! 

Analytical Balances

The simple definition of an analytical balance is this: a balance designed to measure smaller things with extreme accuracy. As you might assume, the maximum weight capacity of an analytical balance won’t be very high—but, if accuracy is important in your industry, this is probably the scale category for you. 

Analytical balances can measure up to four decimal places to the right of the decimal point, and are so sensitive that even a slight breeze can affect its measurement. If this is the kind of scale you need, you should have a designated place in the lab where minimal interference will occur when using this kind of scale. 

Precision Balances

Despite what its name might suggest, “precision” balances aren’t as precise as analytical balances. They’re also known as top-loading scales, and can typically measure up to three decimal places beyond the decimal point. Environmental conditions won’t interfere as easily with measurements, and you’ll usually receive a reading within a few seconds.

Conclusion

Your choice of balance will, of course, depend on your specific application and what materials need weighing. But, essentially, once you decide how much accuracy matters, the choice between analytical vs. precision balances will be much clearer!
